The Philosophy of Attire
“When you buy a piece of clothing, your not just buying a piece of clothing, you’re buying a philosophy. You’re not just putting on a shirt, you’re putting on an attitude. So, what consists of an attitude? What drives it? Music becomes very much a part of that attitude. So we can look at musical genres, and when we think about these genres and we can see the clothing around it.
So, you could go to Miles Davis, Kinda Blue, and I can see the type of clothing you would wear if you’re listening to that kind of music. You can then go and talk about St Pepper, The Beatles, and you can feel the clothing that would be surrounding that music.
So, I think when your ever looking at a piece of culture like that, you’re not looking at it in isolation. You’re not buying an item of clothing, you’re buying a point of view, you’re buying a philosophy, you’re buying an attitude, and that’s what you’re putting on.”
Sir John Hegarty

“I am a photographer in the way you might be a plumber. I like it that way. “
Bruce Davidson – talking on Beautiful Beautiful, a BBC film shown on 5 October 1969 [cited in: Creative Camera February 1970, p. 41]
“The so-called Beat Generation was a whole bunch of people, of all different nationalities, who came to the conclusion that society sucked.”
John Clellon Holmes
